Serpae Tetra Fish

Discu Fish Secrets

There are many different types of fish that an individual may choose from when they decide to integrate this pet into the home. One type that has recently become a popular choice is the Serpae Tetra fish. This type of fish is considered to be a tropical fish that thrives well in aquariums. If you desire to integrate a tropical aquarium into the home, and are looking for exquisite fish to place into the aquarium, this particular type of fish is a great choice. These fish are considered to be among those that are considered “community” species, and they are relatively easy to maintain.

When learning about the Serpae Tetra fish, you will notice that they have the coloring of either orange, or slightly red. Many even state that the fish has a sort of brown coloring. Generally, these fish average approximately two inches long or slightly over. While all fins on the Serpae Tetra are normally red, there is one fin that is not. This is the fin that is called the “dorsal”. On this fin, there is black coloring, with sort of a white trim. There is also another physical characteristic of the Serpae Tetra, and that is the fact that a little dot that is black in color can be found slightly behind what is called the gill cover. This colored dot disappears as the fish grows in age.

When selecting the Serpae Tetra, it is important to ensure that your tropical aquarium has plenty of plant life in it. While artificial plants are easy to maintain and come in many different styles, this fish prefers plants that are live. They also enjoy small pieces of driftwoods in the aquarium. If you are unable to place live plants in the aquarium for one reason or another, artificial plants will be effective. However, they should be the type of plants that can flow freely in the water, as this fish will spend a lot of time around the area that you place the plants.

If you are concerned about mixing a Serpae Tetra with all of the other fish that are in your tropical aquarium, or would like to simply purchase new fish to go in the tank with these fish, there is no need to be. These fish mix relatively well with other fish that go into a tropical aquarium. The important thing that you should look into when electing to put other fish into an aquarium with the Serpae Tetra is if those fish mix well with other types of fish. There are many that simply are better kept either alone unless mating, or with fish that are similar.

There is one type of fish that should not be mixed with the Serpae. This is the Neon variety of Tetra fish. Neon Tetra fish are relatively calm and are considered great fish as far as a community aquarium are concerned; however, they may experience unhappiness in the same tank as the Serpae because this type of fish is considered to be a bit on the aggressive side. Typically, the only aggression that is shown during the Serpae is during feeding times. While feeding, you may see the Serpae catching the fins of other fish and acting very territorial. The Neon variety is usually frightened by this behavior as they lack the same aggression during feeding.

It is typically considered acceptable to place just one Serpae in an aquarium, it is best to place approximately six in one tank. Having a “school” of these fish is considered to be appropriate because they are most happy in a group of their own kind. This is because of the fact that they enjoy playing with one another by chasing each other, and swimming in teams. When there is only one of the Serpae in a tank, it will become bored and unhappy because it generally leaves other types of fish to themselves.

These types of fish enjoy a variety of foods. One that they particularly love is live fresh foods, like brine shrimp. It has also been established that they enjoy feeding on blood worms. If you prefer, you may feed these types of foods frozen. Fish food flakes that are designed for tropical fish and/or Serpae Tetras are also considered to be an appropriate food for these fish. It is important to ensure that these fish are fed foods that are considered to be high in quality so that they remain healthy, and their coloring remains consistent throughout their lives.
