If you are considering purchasing a cat, or already own a cat, it is important to ensure that you have a basic understanding of cat behavior. There are a number of cat breeds available when choosing this type of pet, and it has been discovered that each breed has a unique set of behavior traits. While it is important to understand the breed of cat that you choose, there are many basic behaviors that are exhibited among all types of felines. Here, you will come to understand behavior in these pets, and the many reasons why these animals act the way that they do.

Throughout history, these animals have been domesticated. Feline ancestry proves that, at one time, these animals spent a lot of time by themselves. During this time, they would hunt, play, and explore their surroundings. As generations passed, these animals quickly adapted to being around other animals of the same type. Now, these creatures are able to adjust to living with other cats, different kinds of pets, and even people! While this adjustment has been made, many scientists that study cat behavior feel that the transition will never be 100% completed. The cat still has guidelines for the interactions that it participates in, and still, displays a certain sense of independence.

Understanding of Cat BehaviorOne of the most basic types of behavior that all cats have maintained throughout the many generations that have passed is their natural instinct to hunt. While many of these animals still view hunting as their sole source of nutrition, other cats simply have converted to the opinion that hunting is a “game” and find it to be extremely entertaining. This is why, many times, you may open your door to find a small, dead animal that does not appear to be eaten in any way. The cat finds the hunting experience exciting. This is not a behavior that can be modified; it is an instinct that every cat carries.

When many cats reside together, you may notice some interesting little things about how they react to each other. There is a “leader” ‘in each and every single group. You may have to observe your animals for some time before determining who the leader is, but nine times out of ten, it will not take long to make this determination. This “leader” is often the animal that basically calls the conditions for the other felines. In the example of the female, she may assist in feeding the young of other cats, spending time with these cats, and even assist in grooming responsibilities. The dominant male cat may be found avoiding other males and even spraying the yard in order to establish their particular territory.

When researching cat behavior, it is important that you understand that these animals are able to communicate effectively with other cats. In addition to this, if you are paying attention, they can also communicate with you. I am sure that most of us have experienced a situation in which we have heard and felt a purr of a cat. As expected, this occurs when the feline is at the height of happiness. We may have also heard one cat meow in different ways. Generally, each cat has a different meaning associated with different meows, but on the most part, people can generalize the message that the cat is trying to deliver.

Normally, meows that are high pitched and sound distressful mean that the cat is, in fact, experiencing some type of distress. Low meows that almost seem raspy may be delivered when a cat is hungry, thirsty, and even sick. High-intensity meows that are accompanied by hissing, growling, and even spitting naturally indicates that the feline is extremely unhappy about something. It is important to spend time with your cat so that you can properly identify the sounds that they emit. This is an outstanding way to ensure that your cat has a high quality of life and that their basic needs are being met.

There are a number of times that cats may not wish to communicate in a verbal way. It is important to study the basic body language that the animal has. This will help you to attune to the cat behavior more effectively. If a cat is angry, for example, you may notice that their body is rigid, their tail swooshing quickly, and their ears pointed in a frustrated position. If the cat is happy, it is common to see that they are in a relaxed position, their eyelids may droop lazily, and the tail is generally still.

If you pay special attention to the general behaviors exhibited by your pet, you will gain an effective understanding of cat behavior. It is your personal responsibility to ensure that when you decide to purchase a cat for keeps, you must know and completely understand that animal. This will make you a better owner, this will make your pet content, and it will ensure that the quality of life for your pet is where it needs to be.
